Shaun Crowley, Peter Beaty, Jared Bajkowski, and Quinn Hernandez. Jared joined the band in early October, but the rest of us have been playing since January.

Why did you choose Momma’s Boy as your band name, and does that name carry any significance or symbolism?

It kind of just started as a joke. One of us threw it out as a bad idea and two of us actually liked it and it ended up sticking.

Pretend you work in a record store(oh wait) and a customer comes in asking for recommendations. What would that customer have to ask for that would cause you to pick up a Momma’s Boy record?

Probably anything that would be garage or indie rock. Anything from Twin Peaks to Surfer Blood

Without throwing anyone under the bus, what’s been the strangest show you’ve ever played?

The strangest one we’ve probably ever played was a high school dance for some cash. We’ve also played a show as a sack lunch in basement.

Describe your sound in three words.

Mad decent jamz

We’ve been in studio and are getting ready to release our debut EP “Liquid Courage” this spring

Getting Baked With Mom

If you were a holiday present underneath the tree what would you be?

Sound Machine Interview: Jaenki

Who are the members of Jaenki and when did the band come together?
Ryan Wallace, Drew Little, Rachel Mallin, and Kenn Jankowski.
Ryan, Drew, and Kenn work together at a music venue.  They are good pals. They like similar jams, so they thought they'd try making some of their very own jams together as a corporation.  Malibu works at the store next door to the music venue.  That's how she and the dudes all met.  She and the dudes all bonded over their favorite jams. They all quickly realized that they would make a great team, in their opinion.

Why did you choose Jaenki as your band name, and does that name carry any significance or symbolism?
"Janky" - from Oxford Living Dictionaries:

Of extremely poor or unreliable quality.
‘the software is pretty janky’
‘there's hardly anywhere to eat other than a janky food court’
‘the car is embarrassing to drive because it's so jank’

"Janky" was already taken, so the band chose to spell their corporation's moniker in a janky way.

Pretend you work in a record store and a customer comes in asking for recommendations. What would that customer have to ask for that would cause you to pick up a Jaenki record?

Customer: "I really love Heroes and Villains, Vedera, Rachel Mallin and The Wild Type, The Republic Tigers, Cory Feldman's Truth Movement, and Tim Cappello; but I've listened to all their songs over and....."
Record Store Clerk: "Let me stop you there. I've got the perfect link for you to go to on the web."  "And if you're into that, we have physical copies of their t-shirts for sale on the rack over there."

Without throwing anyone under the bus, what’s been the strangest show you’ve ever played?

We played a pizza parlor.
It was an afternoon gig.
There were no firefights.

Describe your sound in three words.

Mystical. And. Otherworldly.

What is the next big thing for Jaenki?

Our show this Friday 11/11 at recordBar. We go on at 8pm.
Then the 96.5 Buzz Holiday concert - night #4.

Jaenki is is sculpting a Mt. Rushmore of their most influential people. What four faces do you carve?

Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Olivia Williams, and Seymour Cassel.

Jaenki is in charge of making a three-song mixtape to send into outer-space. What three songs make the cut?

Is this a distress signal or just a representation of the human race?  If our planet was in danger, I would send out a tape including "Trapped in the Closet" by R. Kelly, anything by Corey Feldman, and "Bucket" by Kenny Chesney.
If it is  representation of the planet and how advanced our civilization has become, "Holiday Roads" by Lindsey Buckingham, "Dance Commander" by Electric 6, and "Somewhere near Japan" by The Beach Boys.  Never show your cards.  Keep a solid cosmic poker face.

Jaenki is about to break the wishbone from the Thanksgiving turkey, what is the wish?

For more wishes of course..you're just silly if you don't do that..ALWAYS WISH FOR MORE WISHES ........classic

If Jaenki had it’s own cooking show, what would it be called?

They make shows with only sandwiches.  We want a show with only tacos.  Tacos for Daze.

Sound Machine Interview: Valley Hush

Who are the members of Valley Hush and when did the band come together?

Alex Kaye & Lianna Vanicelli, plus Mat Hofman and Dave Dionise complete our full live band! We started the recording project in early 2014, and have been playing together as a band for a little over 2 years.

Why did you choose VH as your band name, and does that name carry any significance or symbolism?

We wanted an original name that people can interpret in their own way. Valley Hush has become more of a mindset to us over the last year, I think it sets the tone for our music pretty well.

Pretend you work in a record store and a customer comes in asking for recommendations. What would that customer have to ask for that would cause you to pick up a VH record?

Hmm…dream pop, female vocals, psychedelic indie.

Without throwing anyone under the bus, what’s been the strangest show you’ve ever played?

We played a corporate event/party once in downtown Detroit. It was middle of the day and we were super loud in this echo-ey white room. I think the people there were mostly confused by us.

Describe your sound in three words.

experimental, intimate, dreamy.

What is the next big thing for VH?

Our record release show! November 25th at El Club in Detroit. Really stoked for it!

VH is is sculpting a Mt. Rushmore of their most influential people. What four faces do you carve?

- David Bowie / Björk Guðmundsdóttir / Damon Albarn / Yukimi Nagano

VH is in charge of making a three-song mixtape to send into outer-space. What three songs make the cut?

“Something About Us” - Daft Punk, “Feather”- Little Dragon, “On Melancholy Hill” -Gorillaz

VH is about to break the wishbone from the Thanksgiving turkey, what is the wish?

WORLD PEACE. Literally.

If VH had it’s own cooking show, what would it be called?

“The Secrets to Being Broke and Eating Relatively Healthy”. This show would be extremely boring, I cook like the same 3 things haha.

#SoundMachineKC 001 Recap

After nine bands played for eight hours on two stages at the new recordBar, we have the first Sound Machine in the books, folks. It’s over a week later and our ears are just now recovering from the wonderful, loud, mess that occurred; and we mean that with the most sincere rhetoric.

It was the perfect day for a show, the weather, the drinks, the food, and of course, the music. Nine bands gathered at the recordBar’s new location to help The Record Machine kick off our brand new concert series: #SoundMachineKC. If you didn’t make it out, you missed: Macemouth, Weyward Sister, Drop A Grand, Psychic Heat, darsombra, Leggy, Westerners, The Philistines, and the charming trio of women from Osaka, Shonen Knife.

Each band brought with them their unique brand of brutal, beautiful tunes to present the audience with. This first edition of Sound Machine brandished acts with a quick, punchy M.O. like Macemouth and Drop A Grand, acts that mesmerized the audience like darsombra and Weyward Sister, and acts that hit hard with loud explosions of sound like Psychic Heat and The Philistines. The night ended with power punk trio Shonen Knife blowing through their set. Song after crowd-pleasing song until the audience was thoroughly satisfied.

SoundMachineKC will be back at recordBar on November 11th to present our next show, featuring: Jaenki, Various Blonde, Valley Hush, and GGOOLLDD.

Sound Machine Interview: Drop A Grand

DROP A GRAND

Why did you choose Drop A Grand as your band name, and does that name carry any significance or symbolism?
It was bestowed upon on us by Midwest guitar prodigy C.L. Meck in a Furnace Room session. No significance or symbolism whatsoever. Why does everything have to be deep or symbolize some shit these days?! It's about the white stuff, OK?? Bargain-basement Gucci Bette platform heels. Umpteen gigabit pickle loaf-thin PDAs incapable of withstanding a water droplet or brush with the tush. Calculated disposability.

Pretend you work in a record store and a customer comes in asking for recommendations. What would that customer have to ask for that would cause you to pick up a Drop A Grand record?
Where would I locate the Flexi's companion-packaged with frozen hogsnoot pizza?

Without throwing anyone under the bus, what’s been the strangest show you’ve ever played?
Northtown Opry with Ronnie McDowell around 2010, 3pm opening slot. The show was off the chain!! Killer light show, grape soda and popcorn. Back then we traveled in a Penske, and it crapped out in the ice storm. A gal named Florence took us in, unveiled her Ezy Dose weekly planner and it was on. Her cousins hobbled over in the snow and left no stone unturned. Older Women REALLY DO Make Great Lovers!!

Drop A Grand is sculpting a Mt. Rushmore of their most influential people. What four faces do you carve?
The founding members of Penguin Café Orchestra. If they truly are people and not machines. If not… Karl Albrecht, Theo Albrecht, Angelo Muscat & Tom T. Hall.

Drop A Grand is in charge of making a three-song mixtape to send into outer-space. What three songs make the cut?
The Devil Glitch by Chris Butler. That should do it.

What is Drop A Grand's favorite Halloween candy?
Gummie Teeth

If Drop A Grand hadit’s own cooking show, what would it be called?
Thanks for the reminder. It is a sub-segment of our popular VHS series "The Faux Show"! Two Dolla Bill is one helluva cook, always a kettle of Kung Pao on the range or brisket heaped in a clay baker. Let's title it "The Mystery Chef"!?

Who are you most excited to play with at Sound Machine and why?
The Cult. Maybe Tommy Tutone. But probably The Cult. We're just humbled and excited to perform.

What is the next big thing for Drop A Grand?
I'd like to take this moment to plug my second career at DriveTime™. All fans have to do is complete a simple credit application online or visit one of our many centrally located dealerships. Allow me to sit with you (shouldn't take over 18 minutes) and discuss vehicle options from our diminishing inventory. Chances are you are in much better financial pants to obtain a beat to oblivion, hastily reconditioned tin lizzie at a great rate than the majority of our prey (typically 32-58% APR with minimal down. Think $600 on a $3995 purchase… as reference only, only mind you!) No obligation. Contact me via Friendster or sweep by the merch box at the Oct. 15th show. LET'S MAKE AMERICA GRAND AGAIN!!!

Drop A Grand is:

Sound Machine interview: Westerners

Why did you choose Westerners as your band name, and does that name carry any significance or symbolism?

The name Westerners wasn't thought up with any significance behind it but I do love the connotations the name holds.  Westerners, I feel, leaves an open interpretation. Its whatever you want it to mean.

Pretend you work in a record store and a customer comes in asking for recommendations. What would that customer have to ask for that would cause you to pick up a Westerners record?

If someone asked me for a record of ever expanding dynamics, lush harmonies, Post-pop-rock tinged songwriting, classic vibes with modern influence, Id grab that new Westerners record for them so quick.  (When it comes out)

Without throwing anyone under the bus, what’s been the strangest show you’ve ever played?

Not necessarily strange, but definitely the worst. Not too long ago we got pulled over just outside of Columbia Mo on our way to a venue there to play a gig.  Everyone got tickets and Mitch was taken to jail.  Got out on bail and drove the 2 hours straight back home. Defeated as ever.

Westerners is sculpting a Mt. Rushmore of their most influential people. What four faces do you carve?

Oh man.  It would have to be like 30 faces. Too much inspiration in this world.

Westerners is in charge of making a three-song mixtape to send into outer-space. What three songs make the cut?

Again, these are hard questions. We all listen to so much different music and are inspired by it all. Maybe........  Now This Is Music Vol 11

What is Westerners' favorite Halloween candy?

Marijuana.

If Westerners had it’s own cooking show, what would it be called?

DAMN THAT’S GOOD: An Educational Cooking show

Who are you most excited to play with at Sound Machine and why?

SHONEN KNIFE CAUSE DAMN, THATS RAD.

What is the next big thing for Westerners?

2016 has been a great year, but not necessarily our most productive. At least to the discerning eye.  We've finished up our debut full length record, Reoccurring Dream Theme, slated to come out on Record Machine in the spring of 2017 and played several memorable shows. Next year, once the album is out, we are hitting the road like never before to promote it.  Planning on doing some split releases, tours with local homies, vinyl/cassette releases, ridiculous show set ups, at least one video for our single. Really, 2017 is going to be the year we've been working towards since we started and we want to get everyone as excited about it as we are.

Westerners is:

guitarist/singer Mitch Hewlett

bassist Josh Hartranft

guitarist Matt Pelsma

drummer Kainen Spooner

Mitch and Josh formed the band in the summer of 2013 at a crowded, musician filled farmhouse in the middle of nowhere kansas.
